For years, I’ve been teaching spiritual principles drawn from Contemplative Christianity using a series of simple sketches that have now been brought to life by artist Annie Howe and designer Jennifer Pavlovitz. For those committed to justice, advocacy, and serving others, the need for inner spiritual grounding is essential. Leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, and Jesus all lived a rhythm of action rooted in deep inner spirituality. King wrote in his book Strength to Love, “Only through an inner spiritual transformation do we gain the strength to fight vigorously the evils of the world in a humble and loving spirit.”
Jesus also regularly withdrew to quiet places to pray, showing us that contemplation is not retreat from action—but the source of it. Contemplative practices are essential for those whose faith compels them to engage the world with love and courage.
